India Street Hangouts

Jim's Picks

If you are willing to brave the out-the-door and around-the-corner lines, you will be rewarded with some of the best Mexican food in town. The Surfin' California Burrito is one-of-a-kind and is one of my all-time favorites. The entire place is covered in Lucha Libre gear, adding to the fun atmosphere.

Whenever I get a craving for seafood, I head down Washington to Blue Water. They have a variety of fresh caught fish and will cook it however you want it. Their speciality, however, is fish sandwiches. The blackened yellowtail sandwich is a favorite. The outdoor seating is perfect on a warm night.

  • Gelato Vero  3753 India Street  (619) 295-9269

This place has excellent gelato, good coffee, and an ideal location. It has a coffee shop feel and is a good place to relax and enjoy a cup of gelato or to get some work done on a laptop. There is both indoor and outdoor seating.

  • Yoshino Japanese Restaurant  1790 West Washington Street  (619) 295-2232

While I admit this place has gotten a bit run down over th years, it is still a favorite of many in the Mission Hills community. The sushi is not the best in the area, but the restaurant provides a friendly environment for families with kids.

  • El Indio  3695 India Street  (619) 299-0333

Although I don't believe it quite lives up to it's impeccable reputation, El Indio has good Mexican food. The little burritos are always nice for a light meal and the chips are excellent. The outdoor seating is some of the best in this area as it is across the street from the restaurant and in the middle of this bustling district.

  • Saffron  3731-B India Street  (619) 574-7737

Saffron has some of the best Thai food in San Diego. The pad thai here is may favorite, but almost anything you order is bound to be good. The peanut sauce is excellent and goes well with the chicken. This is the perfect place for takeout.
